I love all of your posting.

ummm to jump right in  I've been finding more out about my Bio-Mom (I was adopted) I was told that she was given Thorazine for anxiety and this was years or a couple years after my birth in the 1970's

Don't you think that was a bit much and there was more to it? Wouldn't say Valium been a better choice than Thorazine?

I wonder if things were worse off mental health wise. She did have chronic severe asthma, didn't work (was told that even in a workshop inviromment that she failed),and she didn't drive.

I also learned that she didn't know about the CAH and the adoption was planned before my birth.

I was also told that she did take a swing at a doctor that came to see her for asthma? and knocked him down .....not that I would ever do that

thanks

[QUOTE=Sunshine1;16835]I love all of your posting.

ummm to jump right in  I've been finding more out about my Bio-Mom (I was adopted) I was told that she was given Thorazine for anxiety and this was years or a couple years after my birth in the 1970's Don't you think that was a bit much and there was more to it? Wouldn't say Valium been a better choice than Thorazine?

>>> if your mother was schizophrenic, it would explain why she gave you up for adoption... it wasn't a rejection of you.... she was probably talked into doing it.... for YOUR sake. Thorazine, while listed as one of the "major tranquilizers" is not used for "anxiety" at all ....ever. in addition to schizophrenia, it was also used for what at that time was still called "minimal brain dysfunction.... ADHD. The job description for motherhood and ADD are quite a mis-match... a child requires ones full concentration, 24/7. That eye in the back of the head every mother develops... just never happens for ADD women.

That's not to say we all make poor mothers. We just make poor SINGLE mothers. We need the stability a partener provides to do our best. I could have raised my daughter alone... i just knew she deserved to be raised by 2 parents... not just half of one. A good half... much better than either of my parents... but that's not saying much ;)

Valium would most certainly been the drug of choice IF she really suffered from just anxiety.... but i think that word might have been used to spare your mother stigma by kind doctors. <<<

I wonder if things were worse off mental health wise.

>>> i strongly suspect she was... if she was shizophrenic, thorazine was a miracle drug that enabled her to live outside a hospital... but it takes a long time for a person to get there life back. If she was ADD, we know now in hindsight that thorazine is possibly one of the WORST drugs to use....

Sure, it will tranq. someone hyperactive... it will also make them suicidally depressed... my dopamine level thanks to ADD is already low... thorazine and the other drugs in its class lowers it still more... and as a result, i have Tics that show up when i am exhausted to this very day... and that was with only one year of "treatment" as a child. <<<

She did have chronic severe asthma

>>> oh goodness.

if you weren't genetically CAH, the gluco-steroids she took to control the chronic severre athsma could induce it. OTOH since you are genetically CAH, its possible her medication helped you in utero to develop more "normally".<<<

didn't work (was told that even in a workshop inviromment that she failed)

>>> oh man. not ADD. schizophrenia. i'm so sorry. <<<

I also learned that she didn't know about the CAH and the adoption was planned before my birth.

>>> yes hon... not because YOU were defective.... but because SHE was.

I know that's hard to hear, but would it help you to understand that your mother probably did the most compassionate thing possible for you? That her selfish instincts screamed to keep you... but that her heart knew better? Knew you deserved more than she could possibly give. <<<

I was also told that she did take a swing at a doctor that came to see her for asthma? and knocked him down .....not that I would ever do that

>>> nice to know she had spirit ;) and now you know where you got it from ;)
