Silly question, but why would I have 2 birth certificates, the second one 2 years after the first?

either a name change or gender marker change, or both, or your parents simply missplaced the first and had it replaced.

should be simple enough to see on both if they are identical. if they are then likely the first was just missplaced ie your parents couldn't find it and ordered another replacement.

Yeah, I went thorugh the same thing. My first Certificate did not have a gender on it, but some type of weird code. Then my father had it changed to male at the age of 13. Claiming it was a mistake.

Each state has it's own rules on changes, so check with your state. I was able to find a notion in records explianing the change. I later found out I had a neutered marker. In PA, that is what the put for ambigious genitalia. My father claimed it was a type, according to state records.

It's difficult to ask my parents for any details about what went on in my childhood. My dad won't talk and my mum has passed away.

Since Kailana suggested it, I trolled through the only records I have and came to the conclusion she was right. It seems that they must have temporarily lost my birth certificate and had to get a duplicate for my first passport. We left the States shortly afterwards.
