View Full Version : Giants, Wizards, and Dwarfs was the game to play.

Being a "Mermaid" myself, I rather liked this story:

Giants, Wizards, and Dwarfs was the game to play.
===================================

Being left in charge of about eighty children seven to ten years old, while their parents were off doing parenty things, I mustered my troops in the church social hall and explained the game. It's a large-scale version of Rock, Paper and Scissors, and involves some intellectual decision making. But the real purpose of the game is to make a lot of noise and run around chasing people until nobody knows which side you are on or who won.

Organising a roomful of wired-up gradeschoolers into two teams, explaining the rudiments of the game, achieving consensus on group identity - all this is no mean accomplishment, but we did it with a right good will and were
ready to go.

The excitement of the chase had reached a critical mass. I yelled out: "You have to decide now which you are - a GIANT, a WIZARD, or a DWARF!"

While the groups huddled in frenzied, whispered consultation, a tug came at my pants leg. A small child stands there looking up, and asks in a small, concerned voice,

"Where do the Mermaids stand?"

Where do the Mermaids stand?

A long pause.

A very long pause.

"Where do the Mermaids stand?" says I.

"Yes. You see, I am a Mermaid."

"There are no such things as Mermaids."

"Oh, yes, I am one!"

She did not relate to being a Giant, a Wizard, or a Dwarf. She knew her category: Mermaid. And was not about to leave the game and go over and stand against a wall where a loser would stand. She intended to participate, wherever Mermaids fit into the scheme of things. Without giving up dignity or identity. She took it for granted that there was a place for Mermaids and that I would know just where.

Well, where DO the Mermaids stand? All the "Mermaids" - all those who are different, who do not fit the norm and who do not accept the available boxes and pigeonholes?

Answer that question, and you can build a school, a nation, or a world on it.

What was my answer at the moment? Every once in a while I say the right thing. "The Mermaid stands right here by the King of the Sea!" says I.

(Yes, right here by the King's Fool, I thought to myself.)

So we stood there hand in hand, reviewing the troops of Wizards, and Giants and Dwarfs as they roiled by in wild disarray.

It is not true, by the way, that Mermaids do not exist. I know at least one personally. I have held her hand.

Works for us too, don't you think? ;)

I like that Fulghum quote about kindergartners. Kids tell it like it is, don't they?

Where do you appear as a mermaid, Meresa? I meant to ask you before, when I saw your photo. Do you do shows? Do you make your own fin?

Very cute. I liked that one a lot. I'm more of a Shark then a mermaid:cool: A big Great White Shark, with huge razor sharp white teeth. Sleek, Mysterious and commanding respect! Don't worry though, I don't eat mermaids, fish are our friends!:D

thank you Lost, Billie, Janet and Jules.

Jules you must really be a shark, since you know about the friendship between merfolk and sharks.

Speaking of which, here is a picture of me and my friend Joe down in the florida keys:

Dear Meresa,

What a heart-warming account you have shared with us. Given the "choice" of what was "available" , the child "chose" herself as the only intrinsic truth, even if it was metaphorical. It goes back to an earlier post, wherein I wrote that it is the children who are the "real players" in the "Game", and not the "object" in such. And they should be allowed to play it "on their own turf" instead of what's forced upon them. It was an example of humanistic teaching by an understanding educator....brought a little tear to my eye.
AND , by the way, Jules!! how did you find yourself into Meresa's waters? were you invited!?. or just "swam by" for a look-see?.......just kidding;)....... I've always been fascinated with Manta Rays: large "alien-looking" denizens of the Deep, yet graceful and gentle, with a unique beauty of their own:cool:

Is that a nurse shark? They often hang out in reefs and feed on shellfish! They get about 10 feet in lenth full grown. They only attack people when they get stepped on because they are sometimes hidden under the sand. I read a story of a nurse shark that a diver stepped on. The shark got him by the ankle and he had to drive himself to the hosptial with the shark still holding on to his leg sticking out the window because their Jaws can lock once they bite!

You are correct Jules. That is a nurse shark, about a six footer. My photographer Ed, safety diver Todd, and I were working at a wall just north of the Cow Key channel that day. There is a U-shaped crack in the wall where this shark likes to hang out. We managed to coax it out for the photo.

I have stroked the back of a few nurse sharks in the Carribean. They have a smooth but pebble-like texture to their skin.

You seem very knowledgeable about sharks. Have you encountered any yourself?

my stepdaughter decided to be a mermaid one year, and made a costume from scratch...

Very nice Glenn. Can she swim in it?

it was more for partying than swimming. she did include a pouch in the bottom to hide her feet - not bad for making it from scratch.
