Ok everyone, here's a question for you... I've been asked if I would like to speak about intersexed individuals in my anthropology of gender and sexuality class. If you have been reading my posts you know of my schools background info. I was jsut wondering if this is a good idea or not, and if so, what on earth do I talk about and does anyone have any tips on staying emotionaly sane while talking about personal stuff infront of a group of people?

I think you should use any opportunity to talk about IS-issues. Some day one of your classmates may have a child with an intersex-condition. It is important for them to know, that there are others they can ask for advice and assistance should the need arise.

The first time I did some talking, I felt like I was melting away. After I finished, several people wanted to know more and I gave them some flyers with weblinks and a list with reading materials.

You could start by downloading and reading some of Emi's Zines from (http://www.confluere.com/store/zine-intersex.html).

Just make sure to explain that having an intersex-condition is not primarily about gender and sexuality.

Adam,
I've done quite a bit of speaking on intersex to a variety of audiences. I have some formal training in public speaking on gneder/orientation issues as well as experience. If you'd like to bounce some ideas off me I'd be glad to talk to you. Email me at jcostich@<hidden> and we can connect by phone.

You end up learning as much as they do - it's quite a rush.

I think you should speak.
It will be a life long experience and I am sure if you know the topic , fear of an audience should not be a problem.

Good luck, and tell us how it went.
