Oh no, not January 24th (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=334643&in_page_id=1770)

Scientists have pinpointed January 24th as the most depressing day of the year.

Hi Sofie,

Just out of curiosity, did these scientists present the basis of their finding? I am curious to know how they arrived at the conclusion that January 24th is the most depressing day of the year.

So far, I have made it half way thought the day, and it does not seem much different from other days. But then again, I live in California were all the days are the same... which gets to be kind of boring.

Hi Sofie,

I discovered that if you click on the bright purple area of your first post that it takes one to the article on January 24th.

I quote in part:

"Dr Cliff Arnall, of Cardiff University, came up with the date using a formula to illustrate the various emotional factors at play.

It reads: [W+(D-d)]xTQ MxNA and takes into account six factors likely to have an emotional impact at this time of year.

These include the weather (W), debt (D) (minus the amount of money to be paid on your next pay day) and the time since Christmas (T). Then there is the time since a failed attempt to quit a bad habit (Q) along with general motivational levels (M) and the need to take action to have something to look forward to (NA)."

I am glad to hear that there is a mathematical formula underlying the conclusion. Researchers generally get bonus points for mathematical formulas. But then again, I suspect that the "January 24th" work is of a higher caliber than the transsexual brain studies of Dr. Vilain, which bases its conclusions on a minute area of the brain. I am unimpressed with Dr. Vilain's work and wonder if: 1) there is a connection between this area of the brain and transsexuality. 2) What about the brains of FtM people? Do they show the same features as MtF people? I don't know the brains that Dr. Vilain used, but I suspect that they came from MtF transsexuals. Sounds like possibly very incomplete and inconclusive research to me.

I guess that January 24th really is the most depressing day of the year, as I find myself contemplating Dr. Vilain's work.

I'm sure the aborigines in New Zealand and the tribal Indians in South America will be overjoyed at this "discovery"..........

Actually Jan 1st is most depressing: B (booze nite before) X G (go to work Jan 2rd) + H (hangover) + M (money, meant to pay bills, spent on partying) = D (depression)

I worked on that theorem in 2 minutes!....1 academic award for scientific prediction of depression.

I don't know the brains that Dr. Vilain used

Mice brains. I guess the mice in his lab were extraordinary and wore dresses or something to express their gender. Funny, the mice that populated a former cottage I lived didn't express any gender even as I tried to relocate them instead of killing them.
