Okay, well, it's quite obvious that the destruction and suffering in the wake of Katrina could have been prevented and much better responded to and organized.....fault by now, seemingly, on all levels of government and human societal institutions. That past, I'm wondering about the fate of those human beings who have been "traditionally" regarded as "not-normal" ; specifically gay, lesbian, transfolk, and those with intersex conditions that would "confuse" or disgust the "normal" folks....... or worse. Sure, massive aid and volunteer relief and life-saving measures have been offered by entities, states, and gov'ts far and wide. Will homo-trans-intersex phobia/ignorance affect the fairness of treatment (medically, legally, and socially) of this US population? Will they be accepted by those in their re-located "assignments"?
The American people may really care about the victims of the disaster, will they care as much for those "others" I noted?.. and will the "help" extended to these human beings be the same or less than that for the "normal"?

Many may be extremely upset and angry and blame certain institutions, but if post-Katrina mal-treatment of the "others" I mentioned is evident on a public level and from other citizens.. then the American people have no-one else to blame for those sufferings but themselves and their "selective compassion".......sadly, though, there are already those that evoke their belief systems to justify the suffering as a punitive effect by God...and it's these that may extend their hand, not to help, but to hinder.

For those of us here at BLO that may be subject to a potential local natural or man-made catastrophe, I would like to offer the link below as a guide for disaster preparedness. "Waiting for the cavalry" is not a viable and re-assuring option. Take the first steps to protect and sustain yourself and others until "they" are able to arrive.
