I just saw Star Trek: Nemesis today. For those of you who haven't seen it, please accept my apologies for spoiling this one part, but I just can't resist.

It starts with the wedding of Commander Riker & Counselor Troi. During the reception, Data gives a little speech. He opens by saying "Ladies, gentlemen, and transgendered beings..." Personally, I liked that they acknowledged individuals being of other than simply male or female. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I haven't seen the movie but am curious if mentioning TG people went beyond the introduction...were there any actually in the movie and if so, how were they portrayed?

Answer only if you can do so without giving anything away.

No. It was just that little mention in the wedding toast.
But there was an episode in the series (Next Generation) that had a whole race of "androgynous beings" (as they were described in the show). It was an interesting episode. To them, having any tendencies toward one gender or 'the' other was considered abberant (kind of the opposite of what we have here on Earth) & anyone who displayed these tendencies went for psychological "conditioning".
Let's face it, most people are still not ready to think beyond the "either you're a boy or a girl" line of thinking they've been brought up to believe in. Right now, intersexed people are only something they can mention in science fiction & then only as a politically correct mention in a opening line of a speech, or as characters appearing in just the one episode. Hopefully the next step will be as a recurring character or possibly one of the regulars. I believe it will happen, it will just take time. Once the science fiction crowd can fully accept intersexed characters the maybe people can be near ready for an intersexed person in some other genre of entertainment.

Andi, for some reason having that line by John Lennon echoing in my head "You may say, I'm a dreamer..."
