In the meantime, below is our Spring 2004 Newsletter if you don't.
Dear Friends of Bodies Like Ours,
It’s been a very long winter and no doubt you are ready for spring as much as we are. We have lots of important news and new stuff to share with you in this overdue newsletter/update.
In late January, 2004, we lost an important supporter of Bodies Like Ours.
After a long battle with cancer, my mother died and went on to her next journey on January 24.
As Bodies Like Ours became my reality and grew into her own reluctant reality, my mom—Christine Buczak—grew with it in some amazing ways. At first she was apprehensive about my activism—scared that someone would find me and cause harm as a of being so out. Once she confronted her own shame and secrecy about my birth and her reality, she became a wonderful supporter of the work all intersex activists are doing worldwide. The internet has opened a world of knowledge and does so much to erase shame and secrecy for countless many, and it did the same for my reluctant mom.
Late last year and shortly before she died, she told me several times how she wished she was healthy enough to participate in my intersex activism. If given the chance, I think she would have been out there on the front lines with all of us working to eliminate shame and secrecy. The peer support aspect of Bodies Like Ours was important to her because when she had an intersex baby, she had no support at all and that always stayed with her. She had two children with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia.
In her memory, Bodies Like Ours has created a special fund for you to help us honor all mothers of intersex children who have overcome their own shame and secrecy. Donations to the Christine Buczak Fund will be used for educational materials and outreach to new parents of intersex children. Please consider a donation in her memory today by visiting http://www.bodieslikeours.org/Support_Our_Efforts/donate.html. Our mailing address is down below if you would prefer to send a check.
A November to Remember: You Can Change History
We tend to think of national elections as remote affairs, immune to the influence of an individual vote. But consider: the 2000 presidential election was decided by a mere 537 votes -- that was the margin of victory in the decisive Florida election. The final margin in New Mexico was a mere 366 votes. Both of those numbers are less than the number of people this very small newsletter goes out to and less than the number of people who visit Bodies Like Ours each day.
The 2004 presidential race is shaping up to be just as close--and just as critical. Each and every vote will be vital in determining the course this nation follows in the future. If you want to help determine that future, then you must register. And vote.
Bodies Like Ours has partnered with Working Assets to register voters for the 2004 election. Just go to http://www.registrationbyworkingassets.com/BodiesLikeOurs There you can register to vote, change your registration address, or party affiliation. Just fill out the form, print and mail. It’s easy and quick. If you’re already registered, please forward the link to friends and family.
Registering to vote at Bodies Like Ours helps us eliminate shame and secrecy. Our goal is to register 1000 new voters. Help make history---register to vote at http://www.registrationbyworkingassets.com/BodiesLikeOurs
Other Stuff
Several new research papers have been added to the Bodies Like Ours website since last fall. If you are interested in the latest research supporting the ISNA patient center protocol, please visit http://www.bodieslikeours.org/research.html.
March, 2004 is full of opportunities to learn more about intersexuality. Please visit our upcoming events page at http://www.bodieslikeours.org/upcomingevents/upcomingevents.htm to check if there is anything soon in your area. If you know of anything that should be included in our calendar, please let us know.
Remember to Tell5! Tell the next 5 people you encounter about intersexuality. 5 equals the number of babies and children having non-consensual genital surgery today.
We’ve Moved!
In late December, Bodies Like Ours moved from Tewksbury, NJ to its new home in Easton, PA. With this move and the resulting growing pains, we could really use some help making it work. We desperately need shelving and file cabinets. An Ikea gift certificate would be a great alternative.
We also need a new or recently new desktop PC. If you are thinking about buying a new PC and need something to do with your ‘newer model’ old one, please consider donating it to Bodies Like Ours(but only after calling to make sure we know it is coming!)
If you are in or visiting the Lehigh Valley and would like to visit Bodies Like Ours, let us know so arrangements can be made. We may even be able to throw in a visit to the International PEZ or Crayola museum(s) down the street.
