Hi Everyone,
I wanted to pass this along. It has serious implications for intersexed and transsexual even if you consider yourself straight, because the religions that revile gays revile any sex/gender variant people and if you keep up with their vitriole we've been specifically added to their shit lists. Seeing as the purpose of this law is to sanction discrimination on religious grounds it is not likely that judges will split hairs over it's application to all of us. Your state could be next.
There are medical circumstances (like emergency care and rare specialists) where being refused medical care could permanently ruin your health or kill you because you may not be able to wait for, or find, a queer friendly Doctor.

Michigan Preparing To Let Doctors Refuse To Treat Gays
04.22.04

(Lansing, Michigan) Doctors or other health care providers could not be disciplined or sued if they refuse to treat gay patients under legislation passed Wednesday by the Michigan House.
The bill allows health care workers to refuse service to anyone on moral, ethical or religious grounds.

The Republican dominated House passed the measure as dozens of Catholics looked on from the gallery. The Michigan Catholic Conference, which pushed for the bills, hosted a legislative day for Catholics on Wednesday at the state Capitol.

The bills now go the Senate, which also is controlled by Republicans.

The Conscientious Objector Policy Act would allow health care providers to assert their objection within 24 hours of when they receive notice of a patient or procedure with which they don't agree. However, it would prohibit emergency treatment to be refused.

Three other three bills that could affect LGBT health care were also passed by the House Wednesday which would exempt a health insurer or health facility from providing or covering a health care procedure that violated ethical, moral or religious principles reflected in their bylaws or mission statement.

Opponents of the bills said they're worried they would allow providers to refuse service for any reason. For example, they said an emergency medical technicians could refuse to answer a call from the residence of gay couple because they don't approve of homosexuality.

Rep. Chris Kolb (D-Ann Arbor) the first openly gay legislator in Michigan, pointed out that while the legislation prohibits racial discrimination by health care providers, it doesn't ban discrimination based on a person's sexual orientation.

"Are you telling me that a health care provider can deny me medical treatment because of my sexual orientation? I hope not," he said.

"I think it's a terrible slippery slope upon which we embark," said Rep. Jack Minore (D-Flint) before voting against the bill.

Paul A. Long, vice president for public policy for the Michigan Catholic Conference, said the bills promote the constitutional right to religious freedom.

"Individual and institutional health care providers can and should maintain their mission and their services without compromising faith-based teaching," he said in a written statement.

I'm going to go hide under a rock now. I can't imagine what these people are thinking...

Amazing what many so-called "Christians" will do to be able to discriminate against those whom they don't like.

Funny, but the Jesus I follow and believe in, calls me to love everyone, friend and enemy alike. As a Christian, and a Catholic, I can't possibly imagine refusing to help someone I love, just because I may disapprove of their "lifestyle" (their word, not mine).

Perhaps they follow a different Jesus than I do. I'll stick with mine, thankyouverymuch.

Funny, the Jesus I follow and believe in, calls me to love everyone, friend or foe.

So I am an image of the holy one than we all shall be az1.

I am livid and horrified that this country stomps around the world and vomits human rights and democracy while simultaneously denying basic rights and hindering democracy to its own citizens. To me this and other gross prejudices/hatreds are a combination of the specter of a self-righteous evil and such "correct and control" entities portrayed in movies like The Matrix and THX 1138....can I say "Sieg Heil" now, Andi?

As long as you're not directing it at me, say it all you want. They like to claim we have freedom of speech in America, so let's make them back up that boast!
I've never considered the "United" States to be a democracy, and I pity those who have deluded themselves into thinking it is.

I had a feeling after I posted my previous reply, so I got my little yellow German book out. My book translates "Sieg" as "victory".
It seems to me, that we are not the ones who are greeting a victory, but they are.

Schade :(

I was being snide and ironic. By my "sieg heiling" them as if "they" expect my subservitude in acknowledgement of "their" superiority and righteousness. I've been edgy lately; recuperating from bronchitis and "withdrawal" symptoms from quitting smoking......."snarling" a bit too much, perhaps.
The death of David and other "injustices" by the former-mentioned schwein just really pi**es me off:mad:

Ja, Schade.....aber wirklich doch eine grosse verseckelte Scheisshaufe!!
