The NYC Pride Rally was phenomenal. Great feedback and responses were received both immediately afterwards and via email since Sunday. People are very concerned about the treatment of intersex in our society, particularly in the area surrounding cosmetic genital surgeries done without consent of the person with the intersex condition. Sirius OutQ satellite radio simulcasted the event both on satellite broadcast and via the internet. The entire rally will be rebroadcast Thursday, June 24th from 2-6pm. You can get a non-subscriber guest pass to listen if you missed the Sunday broadcast by visiting their website at http://www.siriusradio.com/OutQ Betsy was on at approximately 3:50pm. Additionally, our friends at Sirius have indicated they will attempt to extract the speech at some point in the future for streaming on the Bodies Like Ours website.
Plans are underway for the first ever annual Intersex Awareness Day being held on October 26 worldwide.
In NYC, the event will be held in very early November due to a scheduling conflict with a cosponsor and the venue. Already, we have some national recording artists lined up to perform. If you know of anyone (musician, spoken word performers, etc.) who you think would like to participate, please let us know immediately. **A note to those on this mailing list and in this category, please watch your email for an invitation. I want to make sure we have the date set before an invitation is sent. The NYC event is being co-sponsored by the Sylvia Rivera Law Center and the NY Association for Gender Rights Advocacy.
Other plans elsewhere include a screening of the acclaimed award winning documentary Mani's Story in San Francisco on October 2. Mani Bruce will be visiting from New Zealand and in attendance at this special event. Also in San Francisco October 9-13, the American Academy of Pediatrics is holding their annual meeting; an action event is being planned to "welcome them to town". Please write us for details if you are interested in participating in this action event.
More IAD events are being planned in Atlanta, Detroit, Riverside, CA., Portland, Or., Columbus, OH., Washington, DC, Jersey City, NJ., Boulder, CO., Montreal, and Burnie, Tasmania. If you are planning something where you live, please let us know so we can include it on our central planning website at http://www.intersex-awareness-day.org. That website is the central planning hub for this day and the events being planned. Intersex Awareness Day is endorsed by the Intersex Initiative and Bodies Like Ours. Several other co-sponsors are also involved. Please visit the planning site for a full rundown.
The Cheers, an online magazine has an interview with Betsy Driver in their current issue. You can find it at http://www.thecheers.org You'll need to scroll down to the Health frame and click into the article from there.
This Sunday, June 27, the North Jersey Record (a major newspaper in NJ and the Westchester-Rockland area of NY) is scheduled to carry an article about intersex issues as well. As with any news items, things can change at the last moment so it is not guaranteed that the article will appear when it is expected to.
An international social justice magazine called Green Pepper has an article by Betsy Driver in their next issue. We'll let you know when it comes out and if it is available online.
