Hi,
Occassionally, I actually go through our logs with a fine tooth comb. Part of doing this also means looking at email logs, particularly for bouncing messages. It's done for a number of reasons, the main reason is to track hacking attempts. This site, like all do, gets hacking attempts on it.
Thankfully, I'd like to think I'm a bit smarter than the script kiddies who launch attempts and the site is exceptionally secure due to some back end coding I've implemented. Most are hack attempts at our mailing system we have set up--our mailing lists and here in the forums--by spammers wanting new addresses to send their garbage to.
As a result of the security issues I've put in place, bounced messages originating in the forums and elsewhere from the site. Here in the community forums this is either email sent to another user or PMs that do not get delivered and end up back on the server they originated from---just like when you send an email from your mail client and it bounces back. Because your email and private messages from the user interface originate from our mail server, they come to a special catch box I have set up on the backend.
The vast majority of them are simply new post notifications sent to members who have since changed email addresses and thus, the one they used to register with is no longer valid. However it also included private messages sent to other members who have an invalid email listed. When that happens---well, you guessed it, I get the message in a special box set up to catch the bounces.
If you don't want me to read those private messages, please make sure you are using a real email address. I usually only do a random sampling unless I sense a problem, and today, when going through the logs I saw a trend with some messages so clicked on many more than I normally do and saw some private messages that I would rather not have. I'm not in the habit of reading them, and didn't but occassionally I do ask for and get help from other people outside of the the Bodies Like Ours family if there is a problem. Those who do lend a hand I trust inherently, but frankly, I wouldn't want them reading my email and nor should you.
If you have changed email since you registered, please update it. You will need to follow the same procedure as when you originally registered. That is, when you change the address, an email will be sent to you to confirm it is legimate. Once you confirm the new email, you'll be able to log back in. if you don't want to change the address, eventually you are dropped from the entire system due to too many bounces. That's been the case for a long time, as others here have learned in the past.
Please note you will need to use an email other than hotmail or yahoo as your email address. I think I mentioned this previously. If that is a problem, send me an email and I can change things manually, however it will still need to be a valid email address. You can simply send me the note from the email you want to use as the confirmation that it is valid.
Thanks,
Betsy
