The next time you browse your favorite far right winged web site, be sure to pay close attention to all the spin they love to put into the wording of their articles. It really is quite fascinating how they can take almost any subject and then massage the words into a form that has little resemblence to the original fact. One of my favorite embellishments that they use often is the word combination "so called". Of course, when they use this preceding anything else, it is an attempt to remove all legitamacy. As an example, when describing a gay couple with children, they may refer to it as a "so called" family. And in the case of transsexuals, and I have actually seen this one, of their "'so called' sex change".
One might ask why would I take precious time to review such sites. I strongly feel one needs to be thoroughly educated with regard to one's opposition. For years I have studied the minds of spousal abusers and hosts of others who slink in the shadows of the dark that can only be referred to as evil. Individuals who wield power, not in giving, but in their self serving swords. But in the process of identifying those persons, the good news is that I can see true friends and better appreciate all of their beauty. (And I have seen a lot of very beautiful souls here at BLO)
So while I am acutely sensitive to language, I attempt to look past the words and focus more on intent. So often we encounter those words of a friend, who, perhaps in a moment less clear due to some upsetting event, might utter something careless in our direction, although unintentional. Allow those words to pass by without reaction and again realize their struggles and pain.
The culmination of understanding the power of language is to then use it to bring the light of truth to this world to rid it of intolerance and hate. And every time a new person joins here and opens their lives, I feel another candle is lit, a candle of truth and hope. Bravo to you all for your courage and strength!!! And with all of this, may dust befall the authors of narrow minded rhetoric and all of their so called experts!!
