GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) The picture of a lesbian student dressed in a tuxedo will not be permitted in her school's yearbook, the Clay County school officials decided.
Principal Sam Ward of Fleming Island High School made the initial decision to pull Kelli Davis's picture from the yearbook, saying he did so because Davis, who is openly gay, was dressed in boy's clothes.
The county school board and its superintendent backed the decision, which was debated at a Thursday night School Board meeting attended by about 200 people.
Fifteen of the 24 people who spoke at the meeting were in favor of Davis and nine supported the principal's decision.
Kelli's mother, Cindi Davis, asked the board to reverse Ward's decision.
``This is not to be treated as a gay right's issue,'' her mother said. ``Rather it's a human rights issue.''
Some applauded Ward's decision, including Karen Gordon, who said, ``When uniformity is compromised, then authority no longer holds.''
School officials have maintained that sexual preference is not the issue, it is gender. They said since Davis did not follow the rules on dress, she will not be in the yearbook.
Bruce Bickner, an attorney representing the School Board, said there is no written dress code for senior pictures, but also said the district gives principals the authority to set standards.
The board took no action to reverse Ward's decision and Superintendent David Owens said the decision will stand.

Uhh... There are some girls that don't like skirts, and it has NOTHING to do with identity. o.O This doesn't make sense...

Uhmmmm, weird people those Americans... a girl in a tux is not allowed to have her pic in a yearbook while everyone want to see John Travolta in drag.

Travolta in Hairspray
May star in cross-dressing movie musical.

February 24, 2005 - Picture it... John Travolta playing the plus-sized, beehive-sporting Edna Turnblad in a movie version of the long-running Broadway musical Hairspray. Pure cinematic perfection. And fitting penance for Battlefield Earth. It could happen, according to sources of industry insider mag Variety.

The trade scoops that Travolta has "the inside track" to star in the housewife role initially played in the stage version by Harvey Fierstein (he won a Tony for his performance), and created by drag performer Divine in the 1988 John Waters movie that inspired the Broadway show. Yes, that makes this a movie based on a musical which was based on a movie (like The Producers).

Screenwriter Leslie Dixon has been tapped to replace Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, who wrote the Broadway script. Dixon's credits include Look Who's Talking and Mrs. Doubtfire.

The New Line-based production is being produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. Zadan told the trade, "We're exploring everything, and all our opportunities are open. The best people get the job."

Hairspray is expected to begin filming in September.

She was trying to conform. If she wore a purple jumpsuit then that would of be against what the school was trying to do. I unfortunatly like men gasp I can't help it but I also remember lesbians in school that dressed like guys and it would of been strange to see them wearing a scooped neck blouse and pearls for graduation. She learned to express herself for who she really is and I bet she'll go far in life.

I had a mohawk in high school for a time being and could of cared less about the school graduation picture. If that's the only thing they have to worry about in North Florida, it must be Mayberry. The worry is about kids staying in school and not killing each other. There are armed cops in schools down here and for good reason.
