I did a number of years in the US Military. I served honorably for 12 years. During my tour I was unaware of my IS condition as was the military. My IS condition did not make me unfit for duty but then I did have infant surgery. So other than being really tall and having a flat chest and limited body hair I was just like any normal teen girl entering the service.

I greatly enjoyed my military service it taught me all kinds of lessons that have carried over to civilian life. Self respect, honor, a technical trade, self discipline, management skills are just a few life skills that I obtained in the military. I also got to travel the world and experience things that I normally would have not as a civilian. I also received large reenlistment bonuses that I used as a down payment on my first house.

The military was a choice for me and I benefited greatly from my experience there. It helped to shape the adult that I am today. With out the military I would be a different person and would not have had the financial opportunities to become as successful as I am today.

With that said; I know the Gay and Lesbians have successfully petitioned the military in to the “Don’t ask Don’t Tell” policy. So how does the military react to Intersex people? Are they allowed in? I don’t think they are. Is IS considered a handicap? I can’t help to think that a young Intersex person would not have the same opportunity that I have had and this is very sad.

I just had this running through my mind today and thought I would share.

I served on a floating city for 4 years and the US Navy knew I was Intersexed and they never blinked an eye.
So I would say yes , An Intersexaul can serve in The US Military.
