Hi,

Does anyone have studies about the long term effects of Fosomax? I stumbled on some not really encouraging things about this stuff and I also read that being on the short side will produce inaccurate results for a bone density scan has anyone seen this?

With the Endo nurse snipping after asking her questions,"You've become quite the little medical person" well excuse me for trying to find out about the thyroid condition that I have now or really had for along time and it was just tested for and nice to remark about my height that was stunted from the condition of CAH. Yeah ...Nurses dare to care? More like burnt out and I don't bother them with questions anymore or concerns pain? Bleeding? Fuck...not going to help you anyway and blow you off. I just get my blood tests results for the CAH and get the hell out...I had to go to a ER to get antibotics for the pain w/bleeding and bless them.

It's my guess that I've had the chronic thyroid problem since the U of Mich but they were to busy sticking their fingers in the clitorectomy and vaginoplasty to address the issue.

Does anyone have any thyroid stories to share?

thanks,
Aimee

Hi Aimee,

I have a thyroid story for you. Several years ago, I had half of my thyroid surgically removed after it had grown very large. When I was a child, I had radiation treatments for chronic ear infections. I should have know that something was not quite right when the medical staff covered most of my body with lead shielding, and aimed the radiation source directly at my ears. I have heard that it was some type of cobalt based treatment from my parents. Since then, I have researched the issue and found that childhood radiation treatments greatly increase the risk of developing thyroid conditions later in life. My mother said that when she was young, they used x-ray machines for fitting shoes in stores. So, you get the picture about the past level of medical ignorance surrounding radiation treatments.

It was a nurse, who was examining me in preparation for ear surgery to implant artificial ear bones who found the thyroid growth. So, I had thyroid surgery. It was not so bad. I have found out that my para-thyroid tissue was in good shape, and it is most critical to preserve the para-thyroid tissue. After the surgery, the surgeon came to talk with me during his rounds. He asked me how I was doing. I had developed a problem with speaking, because apparently the person who sewed me up after the operation nicked a nerve controlling one of my vocal cords. I sounded like Darth Vader for a few weeks, but eventually I regained my ability to speak normally. In a follow-up visit, the doctor told me that he was surprised by the size of the growth, which was larger than his fist. He had huge hands. I researched Hashimoto's Disease and other thyroid conditions, but luckily the remaining half of my thyroid produces what my body needs. The scars are not bad at all, because they are along the line where the throat meets the chest.

From what I have written about the medical treatment of intersex children, some people might get the impression that I do not like all medical professionals. This is not true. I have the highest regard for many people in the medical profession. I view the medical treatment of intersex children as a sad and unfortunate chapter in the history of medicine.

Long-term administration of any bisphosphonates may lead to chronic ulcerative conditions of the gastro-esophageal tract and also the condition in the link below:

"The oral form is much less potent than the intravenous form and appears to be substantially less likely to cause the problem," said Dr. Ruggiero.

It would seem that concommitant chemo-therapy with bisphosphonates is a component of the osteo-necrosis development; not to mention the likely much higher dosages administered compared to fosamax by itself (for osteo-penia/porosis.)

Dear Peter,

Great story and it's always good to read about positive outcomes.

Dear Dana,

thank you for the info and it gives me something to talk about with the Endo. I always like to know the good and bad of the med that I'm taking.

thanks,

Aimee
