Folks,

The upgrade is complete. I hit a horrible problem rebuilding the database however and as a result, posts made from about 3am Tuesday until about 3am Wednesday are missing.

I have copies of them and will work at importing them today.

Sorry for the inconvenience (and the fact that I forgot to remove the password protection from the development directory before crashing last night).

The no background template was retained and was upgraded with the rest of the forum.

I'll try and do a rundown of what the new features are sometime later today but I think most of the UI ones will be pretty obvious after a few minutes.

If you are having any problems with anything on it, let me know.

And, uh...clear your cookies from your browser if you have any problems. Also, it helps if you have javascript enabled (not necessary to use the forums but helpful if you want to use the full capabilities of the new code base).

try this little script to clear out your cookies:

http://www.bodieslikeours.org/forums/mycookies.php

Tick all the items and then hit clear.

When you log in, tick the remember box next to the log-in area. LOL...it took me a day of investigation yesterday before I realized that was the problem I was having.

Also, at some point this weekend, I'm going to shut the board down again for a bit and will attempt to port over the missing posts I noted above. It shouldn't take too long as long as I remember to turn the board back on again afterwards as opposed to what I did the other night.

Thanks! I'm hoping for a couple other items to get added in soon.

Since I am at it, some changes you will find immediately:

* Threads really do expire. Most are set at 120 days from the last post.

* When you visit, you'll see a note at the top left of the main page letting you know if there are any new posts and/or threads.

*Posts and threads only become read after you actually read them. It's currently set to register on the last post in the thread so until you read that one, it will show as unread. If or as more posts take place in a thread, you will be taken to the first unread one when you open that thread. You can also mark all forums read if you want.

* Titles right now cannot be edited as I discovered last night. I'll see if I can change that.

* New posts will show immediately instead of requiring you to refresh to see them.

*Visually, I brightened things up a bit on the default template.

*And most importantly, the forums should be a bit faster now.

There's probably more but those are the most obvious things.

There was a small security update done this evening. If you encounter any issues, please let me know.

vBulletin actually released a full version update which I decided against doing at the moment due to folks having problems with it according to their forums. Most of the issues are bugs which haven't been an issue here to the best of my knowledge.

I remain a bit concerned about the problems Dana mentioned in another thread and will monitor that. If anyone else has that problem, please let me know.

I have not read Dana's post concerning this matter,is there a link ?
The problems I "still" encounter are,not being able to log in,I usually manage this after six or seven attempts, the problems I find thereafter is for some reason I am automatically logged out by the forum. One other thing, although I click on the "remember me" feature, the forum does everything except remember me.

I had this problem before and you sent a link so as to enable me to delete cookies, this solution has not addressed the problem and the reason I have not been here much lately is due to my logging in issue's.

I've not had the extreme "compression problem" as before stated....once in a while it will still compress the paragraphs together, upon reviewing my post...but I can edit it out (separate). However on my private message review I am not allowed (pop-up) to check on read/unread posts ....underneath the In/Out Box where it says "you have X confirmed and X unconfirmed posts.....I click on that and the "non-authorized/permission" pop-up appears.

That is the only 2 problems I've had......the other mentioned thing about losing a post upon review has not occurred anymore. I use Mozilla, by the way and the AdCom people (University server) have numerous anti-spam/virus/worm etc programs in place...so there should be no "infectious material" in my computer.

I just did a Sophos Anti-virus scan; results = 0. Not sure if this relevant, but when I first log on and at other times, a phrase underneath the statement: thank you for logging on etc will momentarily appear stating Output: compression 8.06.....something like that. I have assumed that to be a property of the upgraded format/system.....that's what I thought was causing the paragrpah compression....dummy me; I may be a "science nerd" but I am not that well versed at all in computer software/hardware.

No. That wouldn't cause the problem as it is a bandwith thing and is forum wide. The problem you've had seems to be more browser based and no, viruses, spyware, trojans wouldn't cause it.

I know this is a really dumb question but it helps me to figure out the problem but are you hitting enter twice after each paragraph? Try using the wysiwyg editor mode which you can choose from your control panel. I spent much time last night in the vbulletin forums looking to see if it is a known issue and there is not a single mention of it.

On the private message issue where you can check confirmed/unconfirmed messages, I'll see if there if there is a permission issue. Thing is, everyone has the same permissions and I'm unable to duplicate when I checked for the behavior with Mozilla. I am assuming the pop-up mention is the error message? Are you still logged in after closing the pop-up?

In this order:

1. Log out
2. Clean your cache/cookies on your machine.
3. Visit the link upthread without
logging in and do it again.
4. Restart your machine
5. Log-in anew, being sure to click on remember me as soon as you do.

Let me know if that doesn't work.

Dana,

The PM issue you were having was a permissions problem. The new code version has the option to use message tracking as a yes/no option and I either turned it off or it was off by default. It should be fixed now.

but are you hitting enter twice after each paragraph?
Yes, that would be to separate the paragraphs. The preview shows it as is, but then I look down to the original post box, the paragraphs are then automatically compressed. ......wherein I re-separate them.....and beforehand they would not re-separate in edit mode.....but yesterday it did "re-separate.

Let me try to recreate that event with this post and my edit will tell you if it still does it.

Lastly, the problem with checking confirmed/unconfirmed reads is now resolved....thnak you very much.

Dana

EDIT reply: Well, I hit enter 2 X, previewed the post (review box = not compressed, but actual post box showed compressed....so I re-separated them and submitted reply and all was ok.....so presumably, it may be something in the preview post thing...??

In my most recent post (IN The News) I separated ( 2x enter) the paragraphs....did not preview.....submitted and all was ok.....so perhaps that may provide a clue to the "compression factor"....maybe:dunno:

Yes, I have also had the problems you stated. This was when I "previewed" my post. When I send a reply straight out of the box, it doesn't seem to happen. Anyway, if my replies happened to have EXTRA line spaces, well, it was only an effort to try compensate for the compression.

The carriage return issue with preview should be fixed. Let me know if it isn't.

I've been having problems with the server being busy, despite being the either the only member logging in, or the second member to log in. Most of the guests, I assume, are robots...

The vbulletin security update has probably been produced to deal with security issues in PHP:
http://www.hardened-php.net/advisories.15.html
Those issues are often exploited by virus writers after they've been announced.

The update seems extremely complex, Betsy. Hope you're getting a life, too.

Yes, it's annoying when you've completed a reply or new thread and then cannot be sent because of either "heavy traffic" (Slurp Spiders and other "creepy crawlies" )or further update in progress (somehow a cyber "stop sign")....I've taken to writing my posts in Word, then paste into reply box...that way if something goes awry, I still have the original content.

The compression factor seems to have been resolved now.

Is a result of being on a shared server and not resulting from this site. I wish we could afford a dedicated server, but alas, it's not in our budget.
