Welcome to Bodies Like Ours. To the best of my knowledge, the term "intersex" has its origins in the medical profession from the 1920's. With the rise of the modern intersex movement in the 1990's, the term "intersex" began to replace the term "hermaphrodite" as intersex people learned more about the medical aspects of a wide array of intersex conditions. Intersex is a controversal term, with some people favoring the term "hermaphrodite", and some people favoring a very recent term "DSD (Disorders of Sexual Development)". There are also other less commonly used terms to describe us. There are a wide range of opinions about these different terms, and the discussion of the relative merits of the different terms can be very intense.

There are many people who object to the "sex" part of "intersex". They do not believe that being intersex refers to either a sexual behavior or a sexual identity. I often remind myself, that no matter what we are called, that in the end, our happiness is what is most important.
