In the past decades several strands of theories, among them (neo-)marxist, feminist, postcolonial, critical race and queer theories have unmasked the liberal citizen as essentially heterosexual, male, white, and middle class. While the pluralization of genders has of recently become a matter of academic investigation, several areas of social and political discrimination of gender variant people have remained oblivious to academic scrutiny and theorization. Indeed, the normalization of the western bi-gendered regime begs a critical introspection.
The aim of the conference is threefold. First, by focusing on the margins of the hegemonic gender regime the conference aims to contribute to the body of theory which traces and questions the dichotomous gendering of the subject from various disciplines. Second, the conference provides an opportunity to discuss and theorize the impact of dichotomous gendering on marginalized sexed and gendered individuals in selected areas of social and political life. Finally, the conference strives to stimulate the theoretical debate on a more inclusive social vision of sex and gender.
Therefore, conference themes will focus on sex / gender regimes, the construction of sex / gender binarism, and the social inclusion of gender variant people. Among the topics will be sex and gender in cultural anthropological perspective and legal constructions of sex and gender, medico-psychiatric responses to sex / gender variance, gender variance and employment, reproduction / procreation, relationships and sexuality, and constructions of sex and gender in state institutions, human rights and constitutionalism, legal reform, legislative interventions, and social activism.
The conference welcomes empirically grounded and/or theoretically informed disciplinary and interdisciplinary papers in particular from medicine, sociology, anthropology and law (legal history, legal sociology) as well as NGOs, activists and individual politicians who problematize and challenge gender binarism.
The conference will be structured with one consecutive panel per session. The panels are open to applicants. In addition we intend to invite plenary speakers, which among others will be Anne Fausto-Sterling (biology and women's studies), Milton Diamond (medicine) and Suzanne Kessler (psychology).
I'd love to present at something like this, but alas, our budget won't allow it.
Betsy
This would definitely be worth trying to attend:

So, after two private messages, I guess I need to clarify why I posted the HBIGDA conference schedule. Two things struck me when I first saw it---the obscene medicalization of us that HBIGDA shouldn't even be getting into, given the fact that most of us want that to go away.
The second thought was "golly gee", look at all those 'experts' up there talking about what we want and why don't they include any IS voices? The omission was pretty glaring. In posting it without comment, I assumed that others would see the same omission and begin comment on it without my opinions tainting the discussion, as I have seen happen in the past.
Betsy
Betsy, I'll comment.
I almost freaked when I saw at least four names of transsexuals that I recognize. One of them from Chicago! She is a trip! She is always hooting about us being marginalized. And one of the others is also a surgeon. We had been wanting our voices heard for s-o-o l-o-n-g.
It sucks being talked about and not having a say. At least some T*s are in there.
Are you sure there are no IS people?
I'm a bit confused about what you mean by "medicalized". I think I have an idea about that, but please excuse me for being stupid.
Ha! I'm lurking tonight.
I think the HBIGDA has done wonders for the T movement, but this is where we differ drastically. For our trans brethren, the HB standards have made it possible to get the surgery so many feel they need by enabling the medical community to see the issue as a medical one.
Most IS people simply want to be left alone, and allowed to grow in the body they were born in, and in the gender that they will fall into naturally. We don't want to be treated in the medical realm of surgery and medicine--we want our bodies intact and to be allowed to grow without interference.
It is that over-attention that I call the 'medicalization" of IS. They end up treating our genitals as a medical emergency, when in reality, it is an issue that should be treated in the realm of psycho-health for all involved---the family, the person in age appropriate ways. Our genitals are usually not a medical emergency. In my perfect world, the treatment of IS would be removed from medical people unless there is an associated medical urgency.
To the best of my knowledge, as a speaker and advocate in this area, none of the people scheduled are IS. Yes, I could be wrong, and if so, I am sure I will be corrected.
HBIGDA has a place in our world, it just isn't in IS.
