Friends, I'm very excited to share with you the details of an upcoming speaking engagement I have in June at the Women in Medicine conference in Provincetown. I'll be co-presenting with a very sympathetic physician who will be covering the medical aspects. I'll be discussing the social aspects and the lack of qualified, compassionate care. Here is the summary:

Abstract and objectives Betsy Driver.

Intersex: The Personal and Family Perspective

Historically and all too frequently presently, the birth of an intersex baby creates unsettling anxiety for both parents and health care providers. Much of this because of ignorance of the medical conditions and the psychosocial impact they have on parents and children. The medical profession too often regards intersex people as specimens rather than as people. This presentation will demonstrate the effects of the ignorance of health care workers on intersex people and the challenges they face in finding knowledgeable and supportive heath care.

Learning Objectives
The purpose of this presentation is:
To outline the psychosocial issues for intersex children, adults and their families.
To provide clinicians with appropriate skills to provide high quality medical care with dignity and respect to intesex babies, children and adults.
To provide skills and information to help families and individuals decide if and when to have surgery and guide them in their exploration of gender identity and sexual orientation.

If you can take a moment to send me a note about experiences you have had that I can use, I would be grateful. I'd like to go in there with armed with experiences from real people.
