Both actually,
First Intersex has not just become used as a third gender identity but its also percieved that way. This persception is extremely prevalant within the LGBTQ community. Now there is also a big difference between saying "I have an intersex condition" and "I'm Intersex". This incorrect perception was created decades ago, but non the less its still around. Also the idea of an Intersex community to me has become a misnomore since there isn't a community of everyone with these diseases anymore than there's a "cancer community" it does even seem right. Any community that has come to exist isn't just those of us who are involved in activism focused on changing the medical establishment treatment of those born the ambigous(to them) genitals. In fact many in any community that has come to exist don't even have any of the D.S.D.. I hope that help clarify what I'm talking about. There are other issues that I have with the very word, saying Intersex just conveys the idea of us somehow being between the sexes, which is just not true. We're not hermaphodites nor are we what people most commonly think of when they hear, say, or think hermaphrodite.
The number one thing I have against any thing Intersex is the current medical model of treatment. Choosing to always simply present the options of mutilating surgeries to parents, or just doing them, is not an acceptable model of treatment. Intersex has come to be represent a system that is purely masochistic, sadistic, and leaves horrible physical and emotional scars. Not to mention in many cases surgeries leave vaginas that don't provide us with a natural level of sexual enjoyment, or even a natural sexual experience. And these surgeries are all based on 'normalizing' our bodies based solely on a reproductive functionality. I could talk forever on my issues with the medical establishments approach, but it comes down to the fact that the current model needs to be replaced and the D.S.D. model does that in the best way possible. A way that is both safe and respecting of our rights.
That highlights my issues with 'Intersex' as a condition, treatment, and as identity, though I have no way near discussed all of my issues with Intersex in any of these area, and I've touched on how I personally feel, but I hope you understand how & why I'm so passionate about how I feel. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask me. Take care.
