Men seem to have an easier time grasping the concept. Women though are brainwashed to over value the opinions of other people. We are conditioned to 'check in' with others, about how we look and behave, and we also unconsciously equate our insecurity with femininity. Many women must wait until they are in midlife, to even begin to see through such nonsense, and sadly some women never do. I know my own mother never did, and as a result she was miserably insecure and unhappy.
