Painful experiences often lead to creativity

Although I wrote this awhile back, I thought it might be worthwhile to share it here.

*******************************************
And it occured to me last night...
Or I simply let myself remember

That when I was a small child,
I thought one day,
one of the doctors would tell me what I already knew.

That I was a boy, not a girl.

That the reason they were always looking at me,
was to try to determine,
if the right decision had been made
or not

I always expected that they would figure it out,
and finally say the words out loud.
But there were only hushed whispers,
around me, not to me
in language I did not understand.

Each time I went,
I waited for those words.
Until I waited no more.
*************************************************

"waited no more"---

Hi,
Not sure that most of you know me. I usually post on the parenting forum.
I read your poem. I am the mom of a almost 9 yr old intersex child. Kelli has waited for someone to say those words that she already knows and this made me think of her. She has had many doctors look at her over the years. She has recently insisted that she is "Max" - a boy and not a girl. I just told her the whole story about her past and having been raised as male for the first 11 weeks of her life. She had been having suicidal tendencies and many difficulties emotionally. I felt it was time for Kelli to know everything. Therefore--she waits 'no more'. I am sorry that not everyone gets to hear the truth or hear those words. My goal is for Kelli to decide if she wants to identify as Max or Kelli. It is not mine or anyone elses decision.I want her to always know it is ok to be whoever she feels she is most comfortable as. She is a beautiful child and I feel all human beings should be aloud to feel this about themselves.

Thank you for giving your child such a powerful choice.

Glenn

P.S. And Renee - thanks for clarification. I'm kinda behind on my smilies!
