Here's an interesting article on the possible opening up of bathrooms to 'all sexes.'

A municipality actually has an ordinance about this?
When college security threatened to call the police on me, I checked for a relevant city or county ordinance and couldn't find one. Still, I didn't want any trouble. The worst they could do would be to fine me for disturbing the peace. And my plea would be that I would be hard put to find a washroom marked "women" or "men" under the strictures they were imposing where I WOULDN'T be disturbing the peace. And unisex washrooms are not the easiest things to find. (Not that I didn't know where they were.)

I was surprised that the Cherry Hill (NJ) mall has the usual men's and women's room, plus a third bathroom between them for families, people who need assistance, etc.
At least it's nice to see something beyond M/F. |

Nyack, NY city hall council chambers has a gender free bathroom. I've been in others, but can't remember where. LOL...and me, when I am out, in a bar or something usually uses the one with the shortest line.
Beach, many of our members weren't here then...can you share the story again? Betsy

re: has this happened to you
So the chain store was a Walmart!
I've been thinking of changing from Walmart for other reasons--the way they are said to treat employees. I get my prescriptions filled there. I'm trans if you don't know. After my second visit to my endo I had to have a place to have my prescriptions filled. Under the name "Donald". After a while I started showing up there in a dress. No comments whatsoever. Maybe I was sort of androgynous even before HRT. Never any problems. I could have been picking a prescription for someone else. One day however the computers were out and they had to do a manual for my checkout and they asked for my driver's license. A bit surprised, the pharmacist (?) looked at the picture and me and the picture and me again with a startled look on her face. Then without saying anything she took care of the transaction. Later I had my name changed and had a new driver's license. The new insurance card had not come through. (I was a little nasty when I later told my insurance rep at the company not to call me "Mr." when I asked for a card with my new name on it. Never did like him anyway.) I showed my license to one of the clerks behind the counter and she said she could change my info for me. Took her two times. And then it was "Hey, Dawn" when she saw me coming in for a long time. The last time I was there I got there just before closing and the pharmacist put the closed sign down right in front of me. I remarked that he was just closing and it would be too much to ask for my prescription and he said, "Oh, just for that?" and picked it and it was "no problem since you have been coming here for a long time". He's seen both IDs. And he gave me a big smile. Who's to tell.... I'm in the north. Does that make a difference?

Washroom signs
Sometimes I think having a sign designating what sex the washroom was to be used for is silly. Yeah, what one do you use if you don't want to declare yourself? And in smaller restaurants there is only room for one person anyway. One of my favorite places has only one washroom with two stick figures on the front with a slash between them. I don't want to have to worry about how people are going to take which one you use.
Once a friend of mine was going on a personal retreat. I went along with her the first night because she wanted to get it started off right. We had a whole floor to ourselves, except for an apartment on the end. When we went looking for the washroom it was one huge room with lavatories and stalls and two shower stalls. The sign on the door said "Men". Puzzled, my friend saw that the sign was on a hinge and lifted it up and the other side said "Women" so she turned it over and rehung it. So simple.
