Scars
Scars are signposts. They are markers. They are indications: "Something happened here;" marks of pain; marks of trauma; marks of mistakes; marks of accidents. The visible reminder of the past.
An outward show of what the inside can't reveal; a mark; an identifier; a tattoo in flesh. Scars: ever-present evidence of events long-ago; battles fought; traumas survived. Scars are badges of honor.

Let's not forget about the psychological scars; which run deeper than the ones in flesh and sometimes never really heal.
