Bodies Like Ours seeks to end the shame and secrecy that surrounds people born intersexed and/or with atypical genitals through community and peer support. Our goals are to make it acceptable to be born intersexed and/or with atypical genitals. We are not a small community, but years of shame, secrecy, and isolation have taught us to remain hidden, hoping that no one discovers our "secret".
Bodies Like Ours believes that openness within our community will lead to better medical treatments and more acceptance by society in general. We embrace patient-centered medical protocols. We believe that intersex education should stress that infant genital surgeries, which are often cosmetic in nature, are not necessary to make us complete human beings. We prefer not to be surgically or hormonally treated without our own consent.
