Thyroid problem

My granny has been diagnosed with thyroid goiter since last month. View her old age the doctor did not want to make her undergo a surgery. She has been put on a medication called synthroid (cytomel t4) to treat this goiter. I would like if it is an effective medicine?? Does it really cure thyroid goiters??
