Outside Magazine-transgender and CAH

I thought you all might find this interesting. The article in Outside Magazine, April 2004 Pg 53 is titled "Michelle Raises Hell: The hottest transgender talent in professional sports is making competition see pink" The article is mostly about changing policies about transgenderd people in professional sports and the Olympics while highlighting a transgendered woman named Michelle Dumaresq. It seems the trend is leaning toward a "don't ask don't tell" policy and many have done away with testing for gender. One paragraph mentions CAH and I'll retype it here:

There is no simple indicator that differentiates a born female from a hormonally and surgically altered one. What makes most girls girls is their XX chromosomes. But some women possess XY chromosomes while retaining the physical characteristics of women. And some produce excessive male hormones, a condition known as congenital adrenal hyperplasia that can bring medical problems and athletic benefits. Eight female athletes at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta reportedly "suffered" from CAH--and were approved for competition.

I found this interesting that people with CAH CAN in fact compete in the Olympics and that 8 did in 1996! I did NOt like the quotes around suffered as if this is untrue....if only they knew the day we had on Tuesday with a very lethargic little girl (for no apparent reason, too! Scary.) Julia
